Nagelsmann's Reset: Germany's 2026 World Cup Squad Predicted

Twelve years without progressing past the group stage. Nagelsmann's young Germany. Our predicted 26 and XI for the Ecuador opener.

Two consecutive group stage exits. 2018, Germany finished bottom of their group. 2022, knocked out in the group again. The most successful nation in tournament football, outside of Brazil and Argentina, has spent twelve years watching other teams lift trophies at World Cups.

Nagelsmann is the answer. The qualifying campaign was excellent — five wins and a draw, no losses. The squad is younger and more exciting than at any point since 2010. Florian Wirtz is now the most important player in this team. And Group E, while it looks manageable on paper, has enough to catch Germany out if they repeat old habits.

They won't. Here's why.

Goalkeeper: Baumann or Nübel?

Oliver Baumann was Nagelsmann's choice through qualifying. He's calm, commands his area well, and has been consistent at club level for years. He is not the most exciting name in the squad but he is reliable in the way Germany need their goalkeeper to be reliable.

Alexander Nübel is the pressure. He is younger, arguably more athletic, and has pushed Baumann hard through the pre-tournament period. Our call: Baumann starts against Ecuador. If he has one unconvincing game, Nübel is ready.

Urban Urbig is the third keeper in the 26. He is 23 and will likely be Germany's number one in the next cycle. He watches and learns this summer.

Defence: Rüdiger, Tah, Schlotterbeck

This is the most experienced defensive unit Germany have assembled in years.

Antonio Rüdiger is the captain's voice in defence. At 32, he is Germany's most battle-tested centre-back — Champions League winner, survivor of big games, not afraid of anything. He anchors the unit.

Jonathan Tah is the organiser beside him. Comfortable in possession, good in the air. He has been excellent in qualifying and doesn't look like the kind of player who folds under tournament pressure.

Schlotterbeck provides cover and competes for a starting berth. David Raum at left-back is one of the best attacking left-backs in European football — his overlappin
