Why Seattle Is The Original American Soccer City
The Sounders did not start with MLS. The Seattle Sounders existed in the North American Soccer League from 1974 to 1983, playing in the Kingdome and drawing crowds that rivalled the best in that league. When the NASL collapsed, Seattle lost professional football for years — but the audience for the game did not disappear. It waited.
When Sounders FC joined MLS in 2009, the club sold out every home match in its first season. Not because they were winning — they were an expansion team — but because Seattle's appetite for football had been building for decades and the MLS arrival gave it a proper vessel. Qwest Field (now Lumen Field) recorded crowds of 30,000-plus for MLS matches at a time when the league's average attendance was significantly lower. The rest of MLS noticed.
